Rodrigues is an island of volcanic origin.It is 560 kilometers from north east of Mauritius.This island is curled up in a lagoon twice its size.It is home to several species of endemic tropical flora and fauna and the unspoiled environment for the nature lover seeking tranquillity.

On August 1st,we arrived the Port Mathurin of Rodrigues.It was a sunny Saturday morning.The Rodrigues Coast Guard showed up and leaded us into the harbor.We raised a yellow quarantine flag when we went into the port.We dropped our anchor and waited for the officials from Rodrigues Customs,Immigration and Coast Guard.
It was a good day for landing.I looked around the port.Only three sailboats were in the harbor,Yacht Ocean Spray,Nicole and Yaima.Suddenly,we heard some passionate music from land.The exotic songs seemed to welcome us back to the civilization.Oh,I longed for a hot shower on land.
The port officials came on our boat by their dinghy.They gave us piles of papers to fill out.It covered every detail from if we carried any weapon on boat to how many bottles of wine we carried.The Immigration offical checked all of our passports."You are from Taiwan?Republic of China?"asked the Immigration offical."Yes,I am from Taiwan."The other officals were wandering the difference between Republic of China(中華民國) and People's Republic of China(中華人民共和國).
The Immigration official explained to the officials from Customs and Coast Guard in quick French and told me that"I don't want to talk about the complicated relation between ROC and PRC.Welcome to Rodrigues Island.But,Miss Lin,I am sorry to tell you that I can't stamp on your passport.You are from Taiwan.You should apply for a visa."I didn't know that I would visit Mauritius when I was in Taiwan.I thought I would go to Seychelles.Due to the PIRATE problem,we changed our plan.When I was on the sea,I totally forgot Taiwan's weak diplomatic position and the VISA thing.I had to admit that I felt very sad in my heart at that moment.
"I am so sorry for the VISA thing.I do really want to visit this beautiful island.Please tell me what I can do at this moment."I said to the Immigration official."Don't worry ,Miss Lin.We will see what we can help so that you can visit Rodrigues Island and our main island,Mauritius.Please come to my office at two.We'll figure it out.You know what,you are the first Taiwanese sailor who come to Rodrigues island."
When all the paper work was done,it was almost one.The coast guards told us there was a Saturday market by the harbor.You could buy the fresh food there."You hear the music?Just follow it and you can find that Saturday market."Follow the music and you could join the local life.Wow!That brought a smile on my face.
I cooked instant noodles for lunch.Spicy one!We were all eager to explore the land.Yuuki asked me the visa problem.This sailing around the world trip was Yuuki's first time abroad.He thought people could just go directly to any coutry they wanted to go.I explained to him the diplomatic relations in the world and differences between Japanese and Taiwanese.
"We are all human beings.We should be equal.It's not fair but we still have to respect the law.Cheer up,Rinko chan!Ganbatteyo!"said Captain Hior.
That afternoon,Captain Hiro and Yuuki accompanied me to the Immigration office.It was a holiday for the official but he was very nice to help me.He asked me to write letters to Rodrigues and Mauritius Immigration and apply for visa.I got a Provisional Landing Permit that day. Thank God!I got a feeling that we would have a great time in Mauritius!
